Open to the public for only the second time in its 57-year history, Chalet Palms offers an amazing opportunity to see a recently rediscovered design by celebrated architect Barry Berkus (Park Imperial South, Merito Manor). In 1965, developer Basil Collier hired the young Berkus to design eight buildings with 32 units on three acres that would take advantage of one of the last large parcels in the premier Magnesia Falls Cove neighborhood of Rancho Mirage.
Berkus’ clever layout of the terraced property creates privacy while encouraging community. Chances for discovery abound among the lush park-like settings which contain lawns, pool and mature palm and olive trees. The superb use of space continues inside with each unit having floor-to-ceiling glass views of patio & courtyard under an A-frame roof, flex-use den, and “Jack-and-Jill” shower. Chalet Palms is an early example of techniques and details Berkus used earlier in Palm Springs and would continue to utilize in future developments across Southern California.
In addition to seeing the largely untouched, original exteriors and grounds, guests will be able to explore the interiors of 6 different residences including a recently fully-restored unit as well as units with contemporary updates and nods to midcentury and Scandinavian style. Guests are invited to visit the pool area for a glass of champagne and an opportunity to speak with architectural historian and author Melissa Riche, the founder of Preservation Mirage. Melissa will be on-site to sign copies of her book, Mod Mirage, and answer questions about the history of Chalet Palms and her story of rediscovering its architect, Barry Berkus.
Do not miss this unique opportunity to experience Chalet Palms, Barry Berkus’ vision for community resort living.
